Using Idea Mapping to Manage Holiday Shopping

Shopping for the holidays has come to be regarded by many as a chore, rather than as an enjoyable experience. Keeping up with lists of present ideas for friends, family, and co-workers, as well as remembering where to get these presents, is what often makes the process so complicated. Idea Mapping is an alternative to traditional lists for managing holiday shopping that can make this process much simpler. With an Idea Map, one can make use of inherent visual associations to remember every present on their list, from the tie for the boss, to the video game for Jr. Thus, Idea Mapping offers a creative and efficient way to manage and organize the entire holiday shopping process.

What is Idea Mapping?

Ideal Mapping is a means of organizing information using an Idea Map, which is a “colorful, single-page visual that captures [a person’s] thinking in key words and images.” Idea Mapping is widely believed to be a more effective means of conceptualizing information than traditional outlining, because it uses a spatial, rather than linear, approach to help define the information. When creating an Idea Map, both hemispheres of the brain are engaged, allowing the brain to process information in a manner more consistent with its natural functioning. The result is the ability to “plan, remember, communicate, organize, innovate, and learn” information quickly and efficiently.

Constructing a Holiday Shopping Idea Map

A shopper wants to get through her shopping list as quickly and efficiently as possible without forgetting anyone or anything on the list. She decides to use an Idea Map to organize the lists, and begins constructing the map by representing the main purpose of the map, her holiday shopping, in the center of the map. Next, she divides her map into the main categories of people she will shopping for, and attaches these categories to the central image via “branches”. She then lists each of the people she intends to shop for on “child branches”. Attached to these “child branches”, on “twigs”, are the presents she plans to buy each person and the stores where she plans to buy them. She completes her map by adding visuals and color associations, such as color-coding the stores, in order to make the map more visually stimulating and easy to recall. The example Map diagram illustrates what her Idea Map would look like when finished.

Idea Maps and Managing Holiday Shopping

As the attached example shows, the shopper was able to organize everything she needed to remember when shopping for presents in a clear, non-linear format. This snapshot document contains the equivalent of what might have been several pages of information, allowing her to quickly and efficiently access and conceptualize her shopping needs. In addition, the colors and visual associations, such as the colors associated with each store, give the shopper several points of reference, simplifying the process even further. With Idea Mapping, the shopper has, thus, turned her holiday shopping from a chore into a fun and enjoyable experience.

Securing Your Home For Your Baby

Posted on Feb 26, 2010 under gardening | No Comment

Life is never the same after your baby comes home. And he keeps on changing, along with your baby and await your baby is growing. Certainly, there are many things that need to be altered in the first few months of the baby’s life. Of course, the only exception is the additional pieces of furniture such as the playpen and crib, among a few others.

But, with respect to your home decor accents, these things don’t have to change immediately. Of course this will change as your child starts to move about on his own. In the beginning, he’s pretty much sleeping and sitting in some type of baby chair.

When your baby does start to gain some independence and begins to move on his own, it is important that you baby proof your home. Start with the rooms that he is always in, ensuring the safety. Then move to the other parts of the home. The fact is, from the moment your baby comes home, you will have to have baby safety monitors. But, you may want to invest in more than one when your child is on the go. This is especially true if your home is multileveled. You want to be able to listen to his every moves.

Remove anything that has potential hazard written across it. It’s surprising how much trouble a little one can get himself into with something that may have seemed safe to a parent. For instance, any type of window dressing, which has strings must be addressed. These strings must never be tied. Many little ones have unfortunately died because of this.

Being a parent means being responsible. To make things easier for yourself and your child, take a look around on the market to see what could help you through the various transitions. Not only will you be helping with your child developing, you’ll also be sure that your child is safe.

But when it comes to bathing your baby, it can be very frightening for a new parent. When you introduce bathing to your child might have a lot to do with how he feels about it. Eventually, you will want to bring some baby bath toys into the bass to make it more fun if he already loves it, and to help them to adapt if he doesn’t like it. A good thing about these toys is that they will learn from them as well.

If your baby is learning something all day long every single day. What seems common and easy to you is a whole new experience to him. So it’s important that you address these issues of him having fun while learning. That’s how babies learn.

Make a School Scrapbooking Border for Children’s Albums

Posted on Feb 25, 2010 under gardening | No Comment

If you’re creating a scrapbook to commemorate a school year you may be wondering what you can use for a school scrapbooking border. Sure, most people use those block letters or school buses and these work just fine but if you want to be creative you can come up with so many other new scrapbooking techniques and things to use to help you celebrate the school year.

For instance think of the child himself or herself. What kinds of activities do they like to do during the school year or what is their favorite academic subject? You can be flexible with disney scrapbooking ideas. If they like science then use science-related objects as a school scrapbooking border. This might include beakers, burners, and atoms. You can even try equations. If they enjoy reading or creative writing then books with classic literature titles may work. If they are really good at music, then of use musical notes or die cuts of their favorite instrument as part of a school page border. Kids into sports might inspire you to use sports items as a school scrapbooking border. Balls, tennis racquets, bats or even sneakers can make great items!

Another creative idea for a school scrapbooking border is to use different quick quotes scrapbooking and phrases in different fonts and typestyles and use those as a border. There are many words and phrases you can use but you may also want to ask your child what he or she may include. Obviously the phrases that kids use every day can change constantly so don’t assume you know “what the kids are saying” today- ask your child! Getting your children involved in designing a school scrapbooking border can also be a fun and challenging project for the both of you to do together.

Remember too that you don’t even need to use school-related items for a school scrapbooking border. Sometimes just using a good color scheme such as primary colors for elementary aged kids or the school’s colors for older children can work just as well. If you carry the same color scheme throughout your album pages, you can tie everything together and have a terrific looking finished product. You might also try using small die cuts to attach together on your page layout as a school scrapbooking border rather than just something you write or draw on the page. This might be miniature books, cutouts of apple shapes, or little brick schoolhouses that you color and then glue on the page as a border.

Posted on Feb 21, 2010 under gardening | No Comment

The intro of the GPS widened the base for another people finder search. It would seem as if people are becoming obsessed with the idea of tracing and locating people there are people that want to find someone with A GPS free. Just how possible is this search and does the law allow it. Read the following paragraphs and find out.

The Global Positioning System operates by calculating the distance of an object from the three aerials that are closest to it. This means the object must be taking out a signal of some sought on order for it to be traceable. In this case it’d have to be a Global Positioning System signal. Cell phones and cars use this technology among other devices of course. It is possible to find someone with a GPS free if they are using any device that emits this kind of signal.

If you want to be able to trace someone that is using a cell phone then at least that person’s phone must have GPS or GSM technology on it. The software ca be installed on those that don’t have this technology. You can find someone with a GPS free if they are using such a phone as well.

The accuracy of this system differs depending on the country which you’re executing the search from. In Canada, South America and United States of America the marginal error is 25m, in the United Kingdom it’s 10m and anywhere in the world that error does not exceed 50m. If someone has a phone that has the GPS technology but operating in a country that does not have GSM networks you will not be able to trace them. Go to Global Positioning System locator site to be able to locate a person with a Global Positioning System.

School Registration

Another familiar back to school event is waiting in line for your child’s class schedule and new textbooks. If your child is young or this is a new school for him, take some pictures of his first impressions of the new school year.  Older children may not welcome photos during school registration, but you can still scrapbook their class assignment schedule after they no longer need it, or a picture of the stack of textbooks may make a nice addition to a school page layout. Registration is also a great time to snap a photo of the school building for a school scrapbooking album

Hopes for the Coming School Year

Have your children write down what they hope to learn in the coming school year. Ask them how they see themselves at the end of the year, and what they are most looking forward to at this grade level.  Maybe they are looking forward to learning how to read or long division or maybe just making new friends. You can include these thoughts in a scrapbooking page.Use each child’s own handwriting to make it more personal.

Library of Congress Map Collection

Posted on Feb 17, 2010 under gardening | No Comment

The United States Library of Congress currently has one the largest collections of antique maps in the world today.  Their collection includes many maps that date back to prior to the official establishment of the United States of America, from a time when 13 colonies helped to found America.

Of all the maps held by the Library of Congress, maps from early military battles are of interest to many.  Before the U.S. was formally it’s own country, it was struggling with Britain for independence.  Many of the colonies that existed at this time revolted and caused the American Revolutionary War.  The Library collection includes maps that document the exact places that some of these battles took place.  The American Revolutionary War was made up of several battles that were fought in different locations scattered across the east coast of the U.S.  These maps show in detail where each of the colonies were located and where battles were fought and lives lost.

The Library of Congress also has many panoramic maps from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, which were quite popular at that time in history.  These are maps of a city or a region that give a bird’s-eye view of the area.  They include trees, buildings, roads and natural objects to give a map a life-like look.  Although these maps are highly collectible, many homeowners and businesses use them for decorative purposes.  They do have a certain artistic value to them and are truly unique.

Early maps from the 1400’s to the 1800’s are included in the collection.  These are maps that were produced many times, long before any great number of people every settled in the United States.  This land was new to these explorers and maps were made to document their findings to take back to their political leaders in Europe.  When the United States was first discovered by Christopher Columbus, it became increasingly important for the old world leaders to understand just how large the world was.  Mapping at least the outlines of the continents became important and many of these maps are in the Library of Congress map collection.

The Library of Congress, besides having a large collection of domestic maps also has many antique maps from other countries of the world.  Maps exploring countries like Brazil, Mexico and Ecuador can also be found in this incredible collection of antique maps.

The United States has long been connected by rail as well and this is an important part of U.S. history.  Detailed rail maps that show old railroad lines and railroad companies that disappeared long ago also make up part of this wonderful collection of historic maps.

If you are ever visiting Washington D.C.  and have an interest in old maps and history, the Library of Congress map collection would be a valuable addition to your itinerary.  Whether you want to view maps of United States or maps of other countries around the world, the Library of Congress map collection is one of the finest in the entire world.
