Composting is a natural process of decomposing organic matter, such as food scraps, yard waste, leaves, grass clippings and other materials into a rich, dark soil that can be used in gardens and flower beds. It is very simple and can be done by anyone with a little time and a few basic tools.

What you need:
1. A plastic trash can or a bucket
2. A shovel or trowel
3. Some compost ingredients (such as shredded newspaper, coffee grounds, peat moss, sawdust, etc.)
4. A small plastic bin or a large plastic storage bag
5. Water
6. A compost thermometer
7. A few plants for testing the soil
8. Optional: some garden fertilizer or a good quality soil mix
Step 1:
Put a layer of compost ingredients in your bucket or trash can.
Step 2:
Add water until the bucket is about half full.
Step 3:
Cover the bucket or trash can with a lid or plastic wrap.
Step 4:
Let the compost sit for two to three weeks. The longer it sits, the better the compost will be.
Step 5:
Remove the cover and let the compost sit for another two to three weeks.
Step 6:
The compost should now be ready to use. You can use it in your garden, flower bed or just put it out on the lawn.
Tips:
If you don’t have a plastic trash can or bucket, you can use a plastic storage bag instead. Just make sure it is tightly sealed so that the air doesn’t escape. Also, if you are using a large plastic storage bag, fill it up halfway with water before adding the compost ingredients. This will help prevent the compost from drying out too much.
