Composting is the process of converting organic material into soil enhancing compost. Composting can be done in a number of ways. The simplest method is to place the organic waste directly into the ground, and let it decompose naturally. This method works well for yard waste, but not so well for kitchen waste. It can take years before the compost is ready.

Another method is to use a compost pile. In this method, you pile the organic waste on top of a layer of wood chips or straw. You cover the pile with a tarp, and allow the compost to ferment. This method is used mostly by farmers, who want to make fertilizer from their manure.

A third method is to use a compost bin. A compost bin is simply a large container, like a plastic garbage can, that has been lined with several inches of wood chips. You put your organic waste inside, and add water. The bacteria that break down the waste work best when they have oxygen, so they need air holes in the sides of the bin.

When the compost is ready, you remove the compost, and spread it around your garden. You may also use the compost as fertilizer.

The composting process can take a long time. The bacteria that are working to break down the waste require time to multiply, and then to break down the organic matter. It can take months to a year before the compost is ready. If you are starting a compost pile from scratch, you may want to leave it until the fall. That way, the pile will have time to get big enough to heat up during the summer.

If you are using a compost bin, you should add some fresh organic material every few weeks. This will help keep the pile active.
